Sleep Apnea, the Most Frequent Diagnosis Among the most regularly treated conditions are sleep-related breathing disorders, particularly obstructive sleep apnea. This condition affects quality of life and, according to specialists, remains underdiagnosed in large sectors of the population. The early identification of this disorder is key, as its consequences can extend beyond daytime fatigue and impact cardiovascular, metabolic, and cognitive health.
Specialized Studies to Detect Nocturnal Abnormalities For the precise diagnosis of these conditions, the INER offers specialized studies such as polysomnography, a test that allows for comprehensive monitoring of breathing, heart rate, muscle activity, and sleep patterns. This type of evaluation facilitates the detection of unusual behaviors during nocturnal rest, which guides personalized medical treatment.
Warning Signs Requiring Medical Evaluation The INER's Sleep Medicine Service warns of persistent symptoms that should not be normalized and require specialized medical attention, including:
Intense and frequent snoring Pauses in breathing during sleep Sensation of choking at night Excessive daytime sleepiness Difficulty achieving restful sleep
The continuous presence of these manifestations may indicate a sleep disorder with significant clinical repercussions.
Habits that Promote Healthy Sleep As part of a comprehensive approach, Martha Torres recommended adopting sleep hygiene habits, including limiting screen use before bed, reducing caffeine and alcohol consumption in the afternoon or evening, maintaining regular sleep schedules—between six and eight hours—and ensuring a comfortable, cool sleeping environment. She also called for avoiding self-medication, even with supplements considered "natural," and for always consulting specialized medical personnel.

Each year, more than two thousand specialized studies are conducted to detect respiratory abnormalities during nocturnal rest By: Editorial Staff LaSalud.mx, Mexico City, February 27, 2026. - The National Institute of Respiratory Diseases "Ismael Cosío Villegas" (INER) has consolidated its Sleep Medicine Service as a national reference center for the treatment of sleep disorders, providing over five thousand clinical consultations per year and performing more than two thousand specialized studies aimed at diagnosing conditions that impact respiratory health and nocturnal rest.
This care capacity is based on over 30 years of clinical experience, during which the service has evolved from the interest of institute specialists in understanding and treating sleep-related respiratory disorders.
Sleep as an Axis of Integral Health The head of the INER's Sleep Medicine Service, Martha Guadalupe Torres Fraga, emphasized that adequate rest plays a central role in the general well-being of the population.
"Sleep is a crucial part of the integral health of the population. Sleeping well is a way to live better and also to prevent diseases," she explained.
From this perspective, the service is not only focused on treating symptoms but also on preventing complications arising from a lack of restorative sleep.
